Meet Da'Martae
Da’Martae is a 7 year old boy who is diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (a complex, rare, and severe childhood-onset epilepsy). Da’Martae is non-verbal, but he is able to express joy and excitement over the things he loves most: watching Paw Patrol, playing with cars, riding in his wagon, and eating french fries and chicken nuggets.
Last year Da’Martae underwent a Achilles lengthening surgery. Prior to the surgery he primarily required a wheelchair for mobility, but he is now walking independently. While the surgery helped, he still has abnormal muscle tone which affects his functional abilities.
Da’Martae’s grandmother has partnered closely with doctors and his therapists to help Da’Martae improve his physical abilities. During his physical therapy sessions Da’Martae gets to use an adaptive bike. Pedaling a bike increases his leg strength, endurance, range of motion, balance and coordination. It is also a socially motivating activity for him as he wants to ride with his brother and peers.
Thanks to Love Fund supporters, Da’Martae now has his very own adaptive tricycle at home. His new bike helps him advance his mobility and reach his goals. The extra trunk support on his bike decreases his risk of falling off the seat, and the rear steering bar let’s his grandmother assist with steering to keep Da’Martae safe as he learns to ride.
